Electric Wheel Loader Powertrain Requirements

Wheel loaders operate through repeated loading, reversing, transporting, and unloading cycles. These operations create rapidly changing traction and hydraulic power demands, requiring the electric wheel loader powertrain to deliver high torque, responsive power control, and efficient energy management.

01

High Output Torque at Low Speeds

Loading and digging require high tractive force at low vehicle speeds. The electric powertrain must deliver high torque and maintain stable output under heavy loads and changing ground conditions.

02

Independent Traction & Hydraulic Power

Wheel loader working cycles involve rapidly changing traction and hydraulic power demands. Independent electric drives allow propulsion and hydraulic power to be controlled according to the requirements of each operation.

03

Responsive & Efficient Operation

Frequent acceleration, deceleration, and direction changes require responsive torque control and efficient power delivery. Motor and transmission control help maintain efficient operation across loading, transport, and return cycles.

Our Electric Wheel Loader Powertrain Solutions

We provide modular electric powertrain solutions for 5–7 ton wheel loaders. The solution combines a PMSM traction motor with a 2-speed AMT transmission for vehicle propulsion and an independent electric motor for hydraulic functions. This configuration provides high low-speed torque for loading operations while allowing the traction and hydraulic systems to be matched to their respective power demands.

The powertrain can be configured for both battery electric and range-extended applications, providing flexibility for different operating cycles, power requirements, and charging conditions.

electric wheel loader powertrain architecture
  • High Torque for Loading Operations

The traction system combines a high-torque PMSM motor with a 2-speed AMT transmission to provide the wheel-end torque required for loading, digging, and climbing operations.

  • Independent Hydraulic Drive Motor

A dedicated electric motor independently drives the hydraulic system, providing power for boom lifting, bucket operation, and steering while allowing hydraulic power demand to be managed separately from vehicle propulsion.

  • 2-Speed AMT for Flexible Operation

The 2-speed AMT provides torque multiplication during low-speed loading operations and a higher gear for transport, allowing the traction motor to operate efficiently across different vehicle speeds.

  • Modular Powertrain Configuration

The modular architecture supports battery electric and range-extended configurations and can be adapted to different wheel loader platforms, hydraulic system layouts, and operating requirements.

Range-Extended Electric Wheel Loader Powertrain

For wheel loaders operating for extended hours or in locations where charging infrastructure is limited, a range-extended powertrain provides an alternative to a fully battery-electric configuration.

The traction and hydraulic systems remain electrically driven, while an engine-generator system supplies additional electrical energy to support continuous operation. This architecture reduces dependence on large battery capacity while retaining the responsive torque characteristics and controllability of electric drive.

Engineering Advantages

Reduced Battery Capacity Requirements

A range-extended architecture can use a smaller battery pack than a comparable battery-electric wheel loader, with the engine-generator system providing additional electrical energy during operation. This can reduce battery-related weight, packaging requirements, and upfront system cost.

Extended Operating Time

Continuous electrical power generation reduces dependence on external charging and allows the wheel loader to operate for longer working cycles. This is particularly relevant for high-utilization applications where extended downtime for charging is difficult to accommodate.

Electric Traction & Hydraulic Drive

The traction and hydraulic functions remain electrically driven, providing responsive torque control and independent power management for vehicle propulsion and working functions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our electric wheel loader powertrain solutions are designed for wheel loaders from 5 tons to 7 tons.

The electric wheel loader powertrain can be configured as a battery electric or range-extended system. The traction system uses a PMSM motor with a 2-speed AMT transmission, while an independent electric drive provides power for the hydraulic and steering systems.
The wheel loader traction system supports peak traction power up to 220 kW, depending on the selected motor and vehicle configuration.
The 2-speed AMT allows the traction system to adapt to different operating conditions. 1st gear is used for low-speed loading and digging, where high wheel-end torque is required, while 2nd gear supports higher-speed transport and site-to-site movement.

The range-extended configuration combines an onboard generator with the electric powertrain to provide additional electrical energy during operation. This reduces dependence on external charging while maintaining an electrically driven powertrain architecture.

The range-extended solution for 5–7 ton wheel loaders supports generator configurations from 65–100 kW rated power and 80–135 kW peak power.

Range extender can be considered for applications with long operating hours, limited charging infrastructure, high equipment utilization, or continuous production requirements. It can also reduce the battery capacity required to achieve the target operating cycle.

Key information typically includes vehicle operating weight, rated payload, maximum speed, gradeability, loading cycle, daily operating hours, hydraulic power requirements, battery voltage and capacity, and available installation space. This information helps determine the appropriate traction, hydraulic, transmission, and energy-system configuration.
