Electric Wheel Loader Motor and Powertrain

Wheel loaders are widely used in construction, mining, ports, road construction, and other material-handling operations. Their working cycles typically involve frequent starting, stopping, reversing, loading, unloading, and short-distance transportation, creating highly variable power and load demands.

Compared with conventional diesel powertrains, electric drive systems offer high motor efficiency, fast torque response, regenerative braking, and zero direct exhaust emissions during operation. These characteristics make battery-electric powertrains suitable for selected wheel loader applications where charging conditions and operating cycles are compatible.

Jenwyn Tech Electric Wheel Loader Motor

Jenwyn Tech provides electric wheel loader powertrain systems in both battery-electric and series-hybrid configurations. The traction system uses an electric motor combined with a 2-speed AMT transmission. For the battery-electric configuration, the system is powered by a traction battery, while the series-hybrid configuration uses an engine-generator system to supply electrical power.

This Product Spotlight focuses on our electric wheel loader motor and powertrain for 5–7 ton wheel loaders.

Electric Wheel Loader Motor Working Principle

A typical wheel loader working cycle can be described as:

t0 (Empty Forward)→t1 (Bucket Fill/Digging)→t2 (Reverse Haul)→t3 (Dump)→t4 (Empty Reverse)→t5 (Return)

During this process, the vehicle frequently changes speed, direction, and load. Digging and loading can also create sudden changes in resistance, requiring the powertrain to deliver strong torque and responsive power output.

In the battery-electric configuration, energy is supplied by the onboard traction battery. The motor controller regulates the electric motor according to vehicle operating conditions, while the 2-speed AMT transfers motor output to the drivetrain.

The first gear is mainly used for loading and heavy-duty operations, while the second gear is used for higher-speed travel and transfer. Forward and reverse movement can be achieved through motor rotation.

Key Features of Our Electric Wheel Loader Motor

Jenwyn Tech Electric Wheel Loader Motor Installed on the Wheel Loader

High-Efficiency Electric Drive

The system uses a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) with a maximum motor efficiency of up to 96.5%.

The electric powertrain also supports regenerative braking, allowing braking energy to be recovered and returned to the battery.

The motor and transmission are matched to maintain efficient motor operation during different working conditions, helping reduce energy consumption and operating noise.

2-Speed AMT for Loading and Travel

The 2-speed AMT provides different gear ratios for the main operating conditions of a wheel loader.

1st gear is used for loading and heavy-duty operations, where high tractive force is required. 2nd gear is used for higher-speed travel and short-distance transfer.

Electronic shifting simplifies operation, while motor rotation provides forward and reverse movement.

The single-gear shifting life can reach 2 million cycles, while the transmission can support an oil change interval of up to 10,000 operating hours, depending on operating conditions.

Compact Integrated Drive Unit

The integrated design provides a compact installation package for wheel loader applications, while the dedicated control program coordinates the motor and transmission according to the vehicle’s operating conditions.

Vehicle Performance

For 5–7 ton electric wheel loader applications, the e-powertrain can support the following vehicle performance:

  • Gradeability: ≥30°
  • Maximum speed: ≥40 km/h
  • Maximum tractive force: ≥160 kN
  • Maximum breakout force: ≥175 kN

Diesel-to-Electric Wheel Loader Conversion

In addition to new battery-electric wheel loaders, our electric powertrain can also be used for diesel-to-electric wheel loader conversion projects.

In one 5-ton wheel loader conversion project, the vehicle was equipped with a 273 kWh lithium battery pack. After conversion, commissioning, and operating-condition adjustments, the vehicle achieved fast power response, sustained output, and stable operation.

Under the project’s operating conditions, the best recorded energy consumption was approximately 8% battery SOC per operating hour, with continuous operation of up to 10 hours.

The project demonstrates the application of an electric powertrain to an existing wheel loader platform, providing an alternative to the conventional diesel drivetrain where the vehicle’s working cycle and charging conditions are suitable for electrification.

Electric Wheel Loader Powertrain Applications

Our wheel loader electric drive systems are currently in volume production and installation, with applications including:

  • Ports and material handling
  • Coal and mining operations
  • Construction
  • Sand and gravel loading
  • Material transportation

The system is designed for 5–7 ton wheel loaders and can also be evaluated for suitable diesel-to-electric conversion projects based on the vehicle platform and operating conditions.
